Castles in the Netherlands
While the Netherlands is well-known for its windmills, tulips, and canals, its castles are just as incredible. These buildings offer a fascinating look at the country’s history, from medieval fortresses to grand estates set in beautiful landscapes. If you love history, architecture, or exploring stunning places, Dutch castles offer something for everyone. With over 1,200 castles, most built during the Middle Ages, the Netherlands is a treasure trove of historic charm. In this post, we’ll highlight five of our favourites. Each castle has its own unique charm and story, and they’re all worth visiting when you’re in the country.
1. De Haar Castle, Utrecht
De Haar Castle in Utrecht is often considered the most luxurious castle in the Netherlands. It dates back to 1391 and sits on over 135 acres of land. World War II caused significant damage to the original garden, but restorers have beautifully returned it to its former glory.
2. Muiderslot Castle, Muiden
Muiderslot Castle, built in 1370, is one of the Netherlands’ best-preserved medieval castles. Located near Amsterdam, it’s a perfect stop if you’re in the area. The castle is also a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list and has appeared in several movies and TV shows about the Middle Ages.
3. Castle De Doornenburg, Doornenburg
Located near Arnhem in eastern Netherlands, Castle De Doornenburg is one of the largest and most well-preserved castles in the country. It consists of a smaller castle and a main castle, connected by a wooden bridge.
4. Slot Loevestein, Poederoijen
Slot Loevestein, which means “Loef’s stone house,” was built between 1357 and 1397. Initially used to collect tolls from passing ships, the castle eventually grew into a full-fledged fortress. It now houses a museum covering three important periods: the Middle Ages, the State Prison period, and the Dutch Waterline period. Slot Loevestein hosts events year-round, with the Winterfeest celebration being a major highlight during the holiday season.
5. Duivenvoorde Castle, Voorschoten
Duivenvoorde Castle, dating back to 1226, is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. Set in picturesque surroundings, the castle was home to several noble families throughout the years. The Van Duivenvoorde family, who owned the castle during its first five years, gave it its name.
